Tarragona, known as Tarraco in Roman times, has some fantastic archaeological sites which are well worth visiting. Set on the coast, the view from the ampitheatre is unforgetable.
The city of Tarragona was long ignored by most tourists, who either passed by on their way to the beaches to the south of the city (Salou, Costa Dorada) - and only saw the petrochemical factories to the south of the city.
Easily reached by train from Barcelona (just an hour away) this is a great day trip, as most of the sites of interest are found within the old Roman walls.
