America’s Cup Barcelona – see the elite sailors competing for the Cup.
Gearing up for the 37th America’s Cup Barcelona. The defenders, Team Emirates New Zealand, have opted to take the race to the Mediterranean, arguing that the city of Barcelona will bring in the crowds and raise the popularity of the event. The final race will be held between August and October 2024, but we’re expecting to see plenty of activity from the summer of 2023 onwards.
Challengers getting ready
The competition has an interesting format, as the final competition is always match racing – the defender versus the challenger. They compete in a series of the best of 13, so the first crew to notch up 7 victories will take home the cup.
The first races in the AC 40 class will be held in Vilanova i la Geltru, some 50 kms south of Barcelona.
Vilanova to host first regattas in build up to the America’s Cup
Events
The cup format changes this time with the introduction of regattas in two different classes – the AC40 for women and youth teams, and the AC75 for the teams aiming to beat the defenders.
We will be on the lookout for news as the event gets closer.
Impact
We can expect new venues to open along the seafront and around Port Vell during 2023 and through the first half of 2024 to cater for the crowds.
