Bookshops worth knowing

La Central, Laie and Finistres are three recommendations when looking for good bookshops.

If you love good bookshops there are a few in Barcelona that are well worth visiting.

La Central has a bookshop in Career Elisabets, just off to the right near the top of the Ramblas, on route to MacBa. Apart from offering a great range of books, there is also a hidden garden and cafe. They also have another bookshop in Career Mallorca, between Rambla Catalunya and C. Balmes.

Laie runs the museum bookshops in MacBa and the History of the City Museum. Their main bookshop is on C. Pau Claris, which runs parallel to Passeig de Gracia. Upstairs there is a cafe and restaurant, which is also popular.

Finistres on Career Diputación is now my favourite bookshop. Spacious and comfortable, with a little cafe at the back, the bookshop is fresh and offers a great selection. In fact there are two bookshops on opposite sides of the street – one offers books on art, music and culture, whilst the main bookshop offers both fiction and non-fiction titles, with a good range in English.

Specialist bookshops

There are off course many other bookshops, some with a specific focus. Whilst you can find many titles online, there is nothing quite like getting your hands on a physical copy.

One of the most interesting libraries in the city is Arús Public Library on Passeig Sant Joan. Located on the first floor, there is a Statue of Liberty adorning the entrance. This public research library is dedicated to the study of the Masonic movement.

Libraries

It is well worth discovering the public library system. Most barrios have their own public library and you can request books from different libraries.

They are a good alternative if you are looking for a quiet place to study or work, and need a break from your home or office space.

It is relatively easy to sign-up once you are registered as a resident in the city (padron).
